Answers to the questions we hear most about ceremonial cacao: what it is, how to make it, and who it's for.
What is ceremonial cacao?
Ceremonial cacao is the whole cacao bean, ground with its natural cacao butter intact and nothing added. It's a minimally processed, full-fat cacao made for drinking, traditionally with intention or in ceremony. Learn more.
Is ceremonial cacao the same as hot chocolate?
No. Hot chocolate is usually made from defatted cocoa powder plus sugar and milk powders. Ceremonial cacao is the whole bean with nothing removed or added. It tastes richer, earthier and more bitter, and you sweeten or spice it however you like. Learn more.
What's the difference between cacao and cocoa?
They come from the same bean. Cocoa powder has had most of its cacao butter pressed out and is usually processed at higher heat, often with alkali. Ceremonial cacao keeps all of its natural fat and is gently processed. Learn more.
Does ceremonial cacao have caffeine?
A little. Cacao contains a small amount of caffeine, far less than a cup of coffee, and a larger amount of theobromine, a related compound most people describe as a gentler, steadier lift. If you're sensitive to stimulants, start with a smaller serving.
How much ceremonial cacao should I use per cup?
Our everyday serving is 10 grams (about 1 heaping tablespoon) in 6 to 8 ounces of hot water or milk, and many people feel the effects at that amount. For a full ceremonial-style dose, 25 to 35 grams is recommended. Learn more.
Why is Mana Cacao pulverized instead of a solid block?
Traditional ceremonial cacao often comes as a solid block that has to be chopped or shaved. We pulverize our stone-ground, full-fat cacao into small granules so it measures easily with a spoon and melts quickly into hot liquid. The cacao butter is still in it; nothing is removed.
What does ceremonial cacao taste like?
Deep, earthy and pleasantly bitter, with a creamy body from the natural fat. Depending on the beans you may notice fruity, nutty or floral notes. Most people add a little sweetener and spice.
When is the best time to drink ceremonial cacao?
Many people enjoy it in the morning as a calmer alternative to coffee, or before meditation, yoga, breathwork or focused work. Because it contains natural stimulants, people who are sensitive may prefer not to drink it late in the evening.
Is ceremonial cacao vegan?
Our cacao is 100% cacao with no added ingredients, so it's plant-based. Prepare it with water or a plant milk to keep your cup vegan.
Who should check with a doctor before drinking cacao?
Cacao is a food, but it does contain natural stimulants. If you're pregnant or nursing, have a heart condition, are sensitive to caffeine, or take prescription medication (especially antidepressants), check with your healthcare provider first.
Is cacao safe for pets?
No. Theobromine is toxic to dogs and cats. Keep cacao, and any drinks made with it, out of their reach.
How should I store ceremonial cacao?
Keep it sealed in a cool, dry, dark place away from heat and strong odors. The natural cacao butter can soften in hot weather; this doesn't harm the cacao. There's no need to refrigerate it. Learn more.
Where does Mana Cacao come from?
Our heirloom cacao is grown by small farms in Costa Rica, many of them Indigenous-owned, and stone-ground in small batches. Learn more.
